Clover and Winter Barley: Our Secrets to Successful Regenerative Farming

For us, regenerative farming is more than just a method—it’s a philosophy of constant innovation. Today, we are taking you into our fields to share two of our proudest achievements this season: our natural weed management and our very first trial of winter barley.

Clover: Our Natural Alternative to Herbicides

In traditional agriculture, products like Roundup are commonly used to control weeds. In regenerative farming, our green, 100% natural equivalent is clover.

Right now, several of our fields are in a resting phase. We have seeded clover across the entirety of these fields. By the autumn, a beautiful green cover will develop. It is directly into this clover cover that we will plant our winter cereals.

Why use this technique?

• Weed Control: The clover carpet drastically reduces the growth of unwanted weeds.

• Soil Protection: It provides an excellent protective cover across our fields while naturally enriching the soil.

  
  

A Major First: Winter Barley

Next, we head over to our fields at the Distillerie des Cantons, where we are closely monitoring a very special crop: our first-ever trial of winter barley.

As we hit the beginning of July, the fields look spectacular. The barley is reaching maturity, displaying a beautiful golden-yellow color across the grain heads. We are thrilled with its progress. This is a project for the future, and we are eager to see how this field performs over the coming years and to discover the yield of barley we can achieve.

From Harvest to the Silos

Once the grains have fully matured and the harvest is complete, the work shifts to our storage facilities.

We operate two 100-tonne silos. This infrastructure is a game-changer for us, as it allows us to store both our rye and our barley at the same time during the summer. After storage, the grain is cleaned and screened. As for our barley, it will then be sent off to be malted for our upcoming projects!
